Capturing the Atmosphere at Pen & a Pint

Community Photography

Community events are about more than what happens on the schedule. They are about the people taking part, the conversations, the atmosphere and the small moments that make an event memorable.

I recently photographed an event at Pen & a Pint, capturing the creative and social atmosphere as people came together to learn, create and enjoy the experience.

Photographing the People Behind the Event

One of the things I enjoy about community event photography is looking beyond the main activity. At Pen & a Pint, there was plenty happening to photograph, people drawing, learning, talking and enjoying themselves. Rather than simply photographing posed groups, I looked for natural interactions and moments that showed what the experience was actually like. These photographs can give someone who wasn’t there a real sense of the event and what they could expect from a future session.

Capturing the Atmosphere

Good event photography isn’t just about photographing people.

The surroundings, details and activities all help tell the story. From people concentrating on their drawings to conversations and laughter between participants, these smaller moments help build a complete visual record of the event.

For businesses, community groups and event organisers, this type of photography can be particularly useful because the photographs can continue to promote the event long after it has finished.

Creating Content for Social Media and Websites

Professional event photographs can provide a library of authentic content for an organisation to use across different platforms.
Photographs from an event such as Pen & a Pint could be used for:

  • Social media posts and stories
  • Event promotion
  • Website content
  • Newsletters and email marketing
  • Future event advertising
  • Press and community publications
  • Records of previous events

Why Professional Community Event Photography Matters

Community events often bring together people who may not normally meet. Photography can help preserve those connections and show the wider community what has been happening locally.

A strong set of photographs can capture the energy of the event while also providing organisers with useful visual content for the future.

My approach is to photograph events naturally and unobtrusively, looking for genuine interactions, reactions and details rather than making every photograph feel posed.

A Few Photos From the Event

Telling the story of the event through photos. Capturing: atmosphere, action and conversions.
