Exploring Queensgate Market in Huddersfield
A Vision for Huddersfield’s Future
I had the opportunity to join the Our Cultural Heart tour at Queensgate, Huddersfield. The project is set to transform the town centre into a vibrant hub for culture, leisure, and community life. The tour gave a fascinating insight into what’s to come.
First Sight of the Transformation
It was interesting to see both the old and the new at the former Queensgate Market building. The building first opened in 1970 and is now being reimagined. Plans include a vibrant new food hall, a glass-fronted library, and a public square linking the two spaces. One of the most exciting aspects of the redevelopment is the building’s iconic hyperbolic paraboloid roof structures. These striking architectural features will now take centre stage in Huddersfield’s cultural hub.
Capturing the Tour as a Photographer
As a Huddersfield event photographer, I joined the tour with my camera to document this important moment in the town’s history. Photographing the redevelopment process provides a record of how Huddersfield is changing. It also captures the energy and excitement of local people who came to see the future.
It was inspiring to see the pride people have in the town. Many are eager to welcome a space that blends Huddersfield’s heritage with modern design. For me, events like this are an opportunity to be part of the community. They also highlight the importance of photography. Photos preserve memories while recording the transformation of the town.
Why Cultural Events Matter
Tours like this show how cultural investment brings people together. They give residents the chance to engage with change, ask questions, and feel connected to the redevelopment of their town centre.
For me as a photographer, it is also a chance to tell the story visually. That includes both the architecture and the reactions of people experiencing it for the first time.

Here are some of my favourite photos from the Our Cultural Heart tour in Huddersfield. Documenting this community event gave me the chance to capture the redevelopment of the Queensgate site. I also wanted to show the excitement of local people as they looked forward to the town’s future.
