Photographing the Scissett Legends Match
Capturing Local Sport
Local football is about much more than the final result.
It’s the players competing, teammates encouraging each other, supporters cheering from the sidelines, and the atmosphere that brings everyone together. I recently had the opportunity to photograph the Scissett Legends Match, capturing the action and atmosphere throughout the afternoon.
From headers and tackles to impressive saves, celebrations, and moments between players and supporters, there were plenty of opportunities to tell the story of the match through photography.
Capturing more than the action
Football provides plenty of opportunities for dynamic sports photography. Capturing these moments requires anticipation, timing, and an understanding of what is happening on the pitch. The aim isn’t simply to take lots of photographs. It’s to capture the moments that players, clubs, and supporters will actually want to look back on.
During the Scissett Legends Match, I focused on capturing the moments that showed the intensity and excitement of the game, including:
- Headers and aerial challenges
- Tackles and defensive play
- Goalkeeping saves
- Players competing for possession
- Celebrations and reactions
- Teamwork and encouragement
- Supporters following the action
Photographing More Than the Match
While the action is an important part of sports photography, it isn’t the whole story. The Scissett Legends Match had a fantastic atmosphere, with supporters cheering their teams on and people enjoying a positive afternoon of community football. I also look for the moments around the game that help show what an event was really like.
Why Sports Photography Is Valuable for Local Clubs
Professional photography gives sports clubs a collection of images they can continue using long after the final whistle.
Photographs from matches and events can help clubs:
Social Media
Create regular posts featuring match action, players, celebrations, and behind-the-scenes moments.
Websites
Show visitors what your club is about and create a more engaging visual presence.
Player Recruitment
Professional photographs can help potential players and families see the experience of being part of your club.
Sponsors and Partners
High-quality images can showcase your club’s activities, community involvement, and events when communicating with sponsors.
Awards and Presentations
Use photographs to celebrate players, teams, volunteers, and achievements throughout the season.
Future Promotion
Build a collection of authentic images that can be used when promoting fixtures, tournaments, registrations, events, and other club activities.
Building a Photography Library for Your Club
One match can provide some fantastic photographs, but regular photography can create something much more valuable: a visual library for your club.
Over the course of a season, this could include match action, team photographs, individual players, coaches, volunteers, supporters, tournaments, awards evenings, and community events. Instead of repeatedly using the same photographs, your club has a growing collection of professional images that represents different people, teams, and moments. This gives you more content to work with across your website and social media throughout the year.
Capturing the People Behind Grassroots Sport
Coaches, volunteers, parents, families, supporters, and organisers all contribute to creating opportunities for people to participate.
That’s why I enjoy including these moments within my sports photography.
